J.R.R. Tolkien: The Spelling Error

First published in 1954, The Lord of the Rings series was a learning experience for JRR Tolkien, who was never one to spellcheck his work. Tolkien was known as an insightful, yet eccentric and flighty writer who produced surprisingly unforgettable works; that changed upon the publication of his LOTR series.

Tolkien’s cover design was flawed as he spelled the series title incorrectly as seen in the image below. He incorrectly titled the series as The Lard of the Rings.

Tolkien’s spelling error caused his critics to squeal with delight.

After several hundred of the flawed books were published, they were finally pulled – in time for the flaw to be corrected and for the series to become a smashing success over the years to follow.
