Marilyn Monroe: Kool-Aid Spokeswoman

By mid-1961 Marilyn Monroe knew that she needed to win back a fan base that had grown tired of her off-screen troubles. In August of 1960 she left in the middle of a filming due to a nervous breakdown. Just a few months later she had divorced her husband Arthur Miller.

Marilyn Monroe’s life and career were perilously close to total disaster.

Less than a decade before Monroe’s career began to suffer, General Mills bought a little-known product named Kool-Aid. A large pitcher filled with Kool-Aid was chosen as the logo. It was called Kool-Aid Man. The mascot was met with mixed reviews by parents and children. Kool-Aid decided to explore other options in 1961.

A walking, talking pitcher filled with blood-red fluid was rather scary in the 1950s.

Monroe’s poor dental hygiene is no secret, and Kool-Aid was at the top of her list of treats along with hot dogs and Dots. She learned of Kool-Aid’s search for a spokesman and eagerly inquired about being the face of the brand.

A screen grab from Marilyn’s audition tape shows Monroe in the midst of red, pink, and white balloons. Her hair was dyed with Kool-Aid, making her trademark blonde hair more of a pink color. When Kool-Aid received the tape, along with other sub-par inquiries from other celebrities, Kool-Aid decided to stick with the Kool-Aid Man, and they have never wavered since.

Marilyn Monroe was distraught when she received the rejection letter from the artificially-flavored drink mix brand. She had pinned her career’s hopes upon being given that position. Her career and her personal life never got back on track. On August 5, 1962 she passed away in a dentist chair during an emergency operation.
